In recent months, there’s been a lot of buzz about revalidation for pharmacists but are you sure what this is or how it works?
Worry not as though the process may seem daunting, we have broken down here and it’s easy. We are here with everything you need to know about GPhC revalidation so do not fret!
What is GPhC Revalidation?
Revalidation is a method that the GPhC has put in place so that the trust the public has put in the pharmacy profession is upheld. It’s important to maintain and uphold the integrity of the pharmacy profession as we are the custodians of medicines. Thus, it is important that as professionals, we strive to continually improve ourselves.
The purpose of revalidation for pharmacists professionals is to help us reflect on our practice, ensure we are up to date with the dynamic role of pharmacists and what influence we have on our practice.
What are the main changes to CPD?
One of the principal changes made is to the 9 CPD cycles you had to create around reflection, action, planning and evaluation on a yearly basis, and recalled every 5 years. As of this year, six CPD entries need to be submitted annually compromising of 4 CPD cycles, a peer discussion and a reflective account.
Every year, you now have to submit 4 CPD cycles only. In the first year, you will only need to submit the CPD cycles, but from the second year on, you will have to submit these along with the peer discussion and reflective account. The CPD aspect is relatively familiar.
But what does the rest entail?
Peer discussion should be a transparent conversation you have with someone you can confide in and who understands your practice. It could be in real life, over the phone or via video call. The person you have a discussion with doesn’t have to be in the UK but someone you can be honest and open with.
The GPhC has 9 standards that all pharmacy professionals must meet, which are:
— Effective communication
— Professional judgement
— Professional behaviour
— Partnership working
— Professional knowledge and skills
— Speaking up about concerns
— Person-centred care
— Confidentiality and privacy
The reflective account just helps to show how you are meeting the standards in your practice. This also, ensures that you are practising safely and effectively.
The GPhC has a good and detailed pharmacy revalidation timeline that can help you keep track of everything that is going on. In the meantime, you should have received an email from them with the information you need to set up an account on the updated myGPhC system as the old CPD system is no longer in use. You can, however, record your revalidation activity before you set up an account and this can be found in the revalidation framework on the GPhC website.
Finally, your submission is checked to ensure you have handed in the correct type and number of records. Like they used to be, they will be entered into a “pool” of records, some of which will be selected for review. If you are selected for review, you will be notified and receive specific feedback from the GPhC. However, if you aren’t selected then you will receive general feedback based on the reviews that were done.
